Puran means sweet filling, and poli means flatbread. Puran Poli (Pooran Poli) is a popular Maharashtrian stuffed sweet flatbread with a delicious filling prepared with chana dal (husked split Bengal gram) and jaggery.
Traditionally Puran Poli is served slathered with ghee and served since chana dal is heavy to digest and ghee makes the process easier. It’s also served with side of milk or a savory curry called Katachi Amti that is made from the water leftover after cooking the chana dal (lentils).
It provides fiber, is a major source of protein, may help reduce cholesterol and also contains zinc, folate and calcium. Toor dal can be used in place of chana dal and it has similar properties as of chana dal. 2. Plain flour, jaggery or sugar: These are the major sources of carbohydrates.
